Make Your Own Rocking Chair Finish

Posted on 10th November 2010 in Home & Garden

A great addition to any porch or veranda is a nice rocking chair. You should learn how to make your own rocking chair.  For hundreds and hundreds of years rocking chairs have evolved and developed into daily life to the extent that they truly are a timeless piece of furniture. You see them used in baby’s rooms, dining rooms, living rooms, backyards and dens. One place that they do fit in nicely is outdoors. A problem with outdoors is that the weather does take a toll on the wood and finish of  outdoor rocking chairs. This is to be expected but there are things that you can do yourself to make sure that you don’t lose a great piece of relaxing furniture.

The first thing that you can do is to refinish your wood chair when it is showing signs of being worn. All you need to do is buy two kinds of sandpaper. First any sand paper that is 80 grit. This will be the sand paper that is course and will take off the existing varnish and finishes fast. The second kind of sandpaper is 240 grit (some people like 180) but this is the last sand paper to use for getting the smoothest finishes possible. After you have the chair all sanded down and important step is to use some water and a sponge to wipe down the chair to remove any dust.

The next step is to purchase some varnish from a local hardware store. This only cost about $20 and can be applied evenly with either a horse hair brush or a sponge brush. Either one works well and most finishes now are stains and finishes. This is a one step process that will make your rocking chair look amazing. As long as you have a good base to start with you can keep refinishing and keeping your rocking chair looking great for years to come. This do it yourself home décor tip is something that many can take advantage of and something that hopefully you will try out.
